The History
H.S. Barney Co. was the star of State Street in Schenectady. Customers flocked to H.S. Barney Co. until competition from suburban malls led to the demise of the State Street store in 1973.
Founder Howland S. Barney came to Schenectady in 1836 at age 14. He founded his own company in 1855, and his store on State Street near South Ferry soon became a landmark. Barney's continued to grow over the years, with displays in several street-level store windows and the company even delivered.
Suburban shopping malls of the 1960's and 70's hurt downtown merchants. Richard P.Davis, and Robert V. Cox, then Barney's President and chairman of the board, respectively closed Howlands store in 1973.
The historic landmark was then converted in to apartments in 1980.
